This hummingbird experiment on a male black-chinned hummingbird was done to see how he would react to seeing his image in a mirrow I placed by his feeder. As you can see he really had a reaction as soon as he saw his own image. As soon as he saw his image he really starts darting around. This experiment was done in Dianes Garden in Waxahachie, Texas.

  • I did this experiment a week or two ago with a much larger mirror. The reaction was different than I expected. It seemed to confuse them more than make the aggressive behavior I was looking for.

One bird even flew around behind the mirror looking for the "other bird" but was really confused when it wasn't there!

Eventually, the birds just come in and feed after they get used to seeing their reflections. That is, if another bird doesn't come chase them away first!

  • I sure will be looking forward to all you do. Have one experiment that I am going to try and it should be real good and a first on you tube. Everything just about has always been done but have not seen this one on youtube.

  • You are welcome/

  • that's interesting because when I had a parakeet he just LOVED looking at himself--he' d hold the mirror in his hand and keep pecking at it and chirping away--I wonder why wild birds are different about that.

  • thanks for sharing your findings
