Secretary Sebelius HIMSS Annual Conference Keynote

Watch Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, deliver the keynote at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Annual Conference 2011 (HIMSS'11) on the progress made in health care information technology (health IT).
Secretary Sebelius emphasizes the developments in Health IT stating, "In the last two years, the share of primary care providers using a basic electronic health record has gone from under 20 percent to nearly 30 percent. And when doctors and hospitals were recently asked whether they planned to apply for new incentive payments that will require them to be meaningful users of electronic health records by 2015, more than four out of five hospitals and more than two out of five office-based physicians said yes." Very hopeful about the future of health IT, Secretary Sebelius jokes, "Eventually, we'll see hospital after hospital clear out their file cabinets. For future generations, jokes about doctors' handwriting will be a thing of the past."
Moving forward in health IT, Secretary Sebelius stressed the need for engagement in health reform, a push for technological development, adoption of EHRs by small practices, and provision of health IT across all populations regardless of racial background, geographic location, and socioeconomic status.
