  • Of course, it was America's innovation that made us go into sub-orbit first. We made warheads smaller and more explosive, So the missles didn't have to be very powerful. But The mercury capsules were larger, so we couldn't go into orbit at the start. The Russians had more powerful rockets, so they could orbit a semi if they wanted to.
