This is the raw footage of the final minutes of WLIR-FM on December 18, 1987. Sorry the audio is so low, it's the LI News Tonight TV footage, not the actual radio feed.
WLIR was one of America's first "alternative" radio stations, and was the New York home for many New Wave artists, such as U2, Depeche Mode, Elvis Costello, Squeeze and others.
DJ's on this clip include Larry the Duck (now on Sirius' "First Wave"), Donna Donna (now on WBAB FM), Andy Geller (now the voice of ABC TV) and Bob Marrone.
I also have the finished LI News Tonight piece on WLIR up on youtube:

Also I remember they went back to WLIR after a few years of WDRE...memory not that good anymore the late 80's Miami Vice was all the rage and we supported Columbia's gross import..

@Pookatube Beaner Radio?? I say it's Fart Radio because Regional Mexican format really stinks.

WLIR also played cutting edge dance music that commercial radio wouldn't touch. That's what I love about WLIR

The Screamer Of The Week (I still have the complete list LIR sent me in 1988!) - John DelBello in teh morning (before he went to Philadelphia) the many live shows the did on Tuesday nights from My Father's Place, Ralph Newman, the News Blimp (solenoid... you will next hear the News Blimp at ...) It is indeed sad that this had to end, especially as it did.

I know, I totally misted up when I heard the beginning of My Way, haha! I was so devastated. I think I remember tuning in shortly after they went off the air and was possibly receiving a spanish station. I don't know how long that went on... I was pretty much a kid at the time so it's kind of hazy.
