This is a re-recording of a 5 minute quick fire rant I did at World of Love 2 indie gaming conference in London.

  • Stories are nice, but it really just depends on personal tastes. Games are so diverse that I think there may be a schism between more "twitch" gamers and more "heady" type gamers. Stating that "Stories are important" is just as much a blanket statement as the "if I wanted a story..." statement. Stories a cool, but for me, it just often just gets in the way of a game. Games like Shadow Run are a rare exception though, so kudos for that!

  • @LazyBrainGames I was at pains to point out in the video I didn't think stories should be in all games and that I enjoy games without them too. Nor did I think the developers whom I was speaking to should all add stories to games. I just think we should celebrate those who make games about stories for those enjoy them. Rather than trying to discourage people from trying.

  • Personally, I think video games can be the best form of story telling. Sure, books are the first thing that will come into your mind when you think 'story', but with games, you can see and interact with characters and objects, change the way the story unfolds, even have different endings in a much better way then books could ever support. Storytelling isn't explored enough in gaming.

  • I agree that story telling is not essential in all games, unfortunately games that would really benefit from a little story telling aren't getting it. I just finished Killzone 3 recently and was sorely disappointed at the recycled cliched characters, and the same old, same old oorah boom ba war story. I'm glad I only borrowed it because I would never pay for such drivel. FPSs are in need of a little story telling.

  • @LazyBrainGames 1:30 onwards.

  • @tnomad Well, I can't argue with that! Sometimes a game's story can drag it down, that's the only real point I was trying to make :P For some reason stories in games is always a touchy subject!

  • That rant was brilliant. +1 to you

  • I couldn't agree more with your opinion. I hate it when games have 8 hour long generic storylines, sure gameplay matters, but is it really that much to ask to have a storyline that isn't just "AN EVIL GOVERNMENT IS OUT TO GET YOU" or "ALIENS ARE INVADING"?

I love it when I get a treat like Mass Effect or Uncharted, or even better when it's something indie like Amnesia or Penumbra as a game that can tell a good storyline while having good gameplay is always awesome.

  • @bubdude umm creative mode came out long before any other...

  • @ublmeister Would this not be creative mode they he's going to add?
