He's probably running a modified release of Beryl in which the Magic Lamp effect may be set to 0 "curves" (or whatever they are called). Compiz doesn't permit this by default since Apple has patented that visual.

simply you dont must install beryl you can install emerald and compiz setting manager code for that is. sudo apt-get install emerald
