1983 Mazda Rx7 0-60 acceleration Test

The Mazda RX-7:
The RX-7 was produced by Mazda from 1978 to 2002. The original RX-7 featured a 1.1 L twin-rotor Wankel engine in a RWD layout. The RX-7's compact and light-weight Wankel engine or rotary engine is placed right behind the front axle which was therefore marketed by Mazda as a "front mid-engine" car. The RX-7 was made to be a replacement for the RX-3 but it eventually replaced all other Mazda rotary cars with the exception of the Cosmo.
The handling and acceleration of the car were excellent for the day. This generation RX-7 had "live axle" 4-link rear suspension, and a 50/50 weight ratio weighing just under 2500 lb making it the lightest generation of RX-7 ever produced. The 12A engine produced 100 hp, taking the car up to 120 mph and accelerating from 0--60 mph in 9.2 seconds. Because of the smoothness from the Wankel engine, little vibration was experienced at high revs, so a buzzer was fitted to the tachometer to warn drivers of the approaching redline.
Options as well as models varied from country to country. The gauge layout and interior styling in the third series was only changed for North American versions. North America was also the only market to offer the first generation RX-7 with the fuel injected 13B GSL-SE. A turbocharged 12A engine was available for the top-end model of Series 3 in Japan.

  • im a wrx owner and im thinking of adding an 85 gsl with 103k miles to my collection any thoughts? please reply:)

  • @EthansOpinion92 The owner of this car had an 85 before this 83 and loved it. The 50/50 weight distribution is awesome, but if your'e coming from a WRX you are gonna miss the acceleration.

  • ive gotten to ride in my friends '83 RX7, it does 0-60 in like 4 secs. because we went up to 60mph and did 8 residential blocks in 10 seconds while slowing down after initial acceleration.

  • @Dude13450 4 seconds is pretty quick...actually it's a bit too quick. Do you have anymore details to share about your friends car?

  • LP, you say she's past her prime but i say you don't drive her like she wants you to!

Like previous commentors say, if you're doing a speedrun, shift at 8k! I bet you'll get more than a second knocked off that 0-60 ;)

  • @Zemus386 We have an update video where we did shift later...just not that late. The owner did not wanna go that far.

  • I find it funny how people with ABSOLUTLEY NO rotary knowledge try to talk they the know it all. A bridge port or possibly peripheral port would do the job, and some! You put a turbo on a stock 12a your just gonna end up pushing the poor thing too far and scatter it.

  • You are an idiot.

Mine had 243,XXX when my original engine blew.

  • Hey check out my vid. I got an 84' rx7 with high miles. A short little run 0-80mph. Let me know what you think.

  • @EthansOpinion92 Do it! I'm a long time rx7 owner and avid fan/collector. It might not be a supercar, but few things will provide you with as much fun. There's just somethign about those cars that have an infectious "fun atmosphere about them" as one of my friends put it.

  • eww 14 seconds ii can scooter faster than that

  • lcbvbnchn

  • it needs an ls1

  • I was thinking of buying one of these, but after that 11second run, no way :/

  • @LimitPushing tell the owner that it's good to rev the shit out of his 12A at least once a week.

  • xDDD 0-60 ????? 0- 100 !!! :D :D :D :D

  • LimitPushing you change the shift in 6,000 rpm, and that kill the power, you can change in 7,000 or when the limited rpm buzz sound and you have better time to 60 or ever in 1/4 miles

  • @LimitPushing oh ill still own it.. its my baby, im just needing an easy sports car while i do tranny swaps and other work to my beloved wrx wagon. haha
