"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God."
Romans 3:10-19

We need God to work grace in our soul by the Holy Spirit's power first. By the time we think we are 'choosing' Christ, the truth is that the choice has already been made. The moment you thought you were born again, is akin to when an infant finally realizes he is alive-which is usually some time later than the actual event. We didn't choose him, but He chose us. Praise be to God, who when I was without hope, gave me hope. Before I knew I needed saving, he saved me.

We are like drug addicts who if given a choice of a plate of drugs that will kill him, or a plate of food that will save him from starving; his addiction will not allow him to choose anything other than the drugs. So it is with our eternal soul. If given the choice, in our depraved state, between sin unto death or the Bread of Life unto salvation, like the fools we are we will still refuse the Bread and take the sin everytime.

This is perhaps the most foundational of them all. It is by this realization that one becomes utterly aware of his own inability to contribute anything of himself towards his salvation. Being totally depraved makes us incapable of even choosing salvation if it were set before us in the most perfect way.
