A dongle is a small hardware device that comes with certain software to prove that you have purchased it; consider it a hardware licence key. In the UK, broadband USB modems are marketed as dongles. I expect that lazy marketing people didn't have a clue how to market this kind of device to consumers so stole another term.
this is really good comedy!, you don't see anything like this anymore in the states... mostly new folk acting like they are actually mentally challenged (e.g. steve carrell)

@traerne - In some European areas they call a USB device a "dongle". Not sure why. I just Googled it.
