I have never finished off the knot before, just always left the figure 8 bare. I was taught by a guide like that and have been doing it like that for years. Though there is nothing wrong with doing it, do it if you like, but I doubt a well tied figure 8 will come undone.

While I'm not an expert on knots, I was curious about this yosemite finish, and there seems to be a little debate about the integrity of it. I played with it myself and felt that it did seem to compromise the uniformity a little--that the friction created by a the clean parallel lines was a bit less. At any rate, I always use a stopper/fishermens knot at the top of the 8--not an overhand. The figure 8 is solid on it's own as long as it is clean; a stopper knot at the top of the 8 is bomb proof
