Evan Stone and the Translucent Ham Sandwich Band is an eclectic, multi-media, multifaceted group based in Orange County. The group incorporates improvisational music performed by a 10 piece band accompanied by videos, a juggler, dancers, magicians, poets, actors, painters and a mentalist in a show that can only be called a sensory overload smorgasbord. The THSB experience creates an undeniably unique atmosphere for both performer and audience member alike.
Evan Stone, Bandleader and creator of the Translucent Ham Sandwich Band has been a professional drummer in Orange County for the past 20 years. His experience as a musician includes performances with notable artists such as: Maynard Ferguson, Greg Adams, Tom Scott, Phil Perry,Toni Childs, Diane Schuur, Joe Sample and Brian Bromberg to name a few.
Evan received the Orange County Music Award for "Best Jazz Artist" 2006, 2007 and 2008.When discussing the improvisational nature of the THSB, Evan states,"If you are improvising for an hour and a half straight (as is the case with THSB), there is no time to think. You must get into a head space that doesn't allow for normal thoughts to enter. As a musician, and a jazz musician in particular, I personally feel it is important to connect with the listener and the other musicians on a very deep level. If I expect them to listen to what I have to say, then I want to put myself in their position and become a great listener so that we can have the ultimate conversation... one without words."
This is the basis of the foundational concepts with this group of performers.
"You may have thought you were transported back to Greenwich Village circa the 1960′s." -Dan (Yelp contributor)
In 2009, Evan once again gained recognition from the members of the Orange County Music Awards, only this time the award was given to him for his work with his original project, the Translucent Ham Sandwich Band.
For the past four years, the THSB has been performing once a month at Orange County's premiere Jazz Club, Steamers in downtown Fullerton. At Steamers, THSB has been honing their improvisational skills to become what it is today, an eclectic, experimental, psychedelic and uniquely improvised performance group.
