Benny Goodman & His Orchestra - Sometimes I'm Happy (Sometimes I'm Blue) (Caesar/Youmans) Arrangement: Fletcher Henderson, Victor 1935
Fletcher HENDERSON pianist and bandleader, had little success managing his own band (although, now Fletcher Hendersons Orchestra is regarded as one of the best jazzy dance band sof the Roaring Twenties). Nevertheless, he was very well regarded as an arranger - he started arranging around 1931 and his arrangements became influential. In addition to his own band he arranged for several other bands, including those of Teddy Hill, Isham Jones, and most famously, Benny Goodman. Here in the recording from the year 1935 Benny Goodmans Orchestra and their arranger: Fletcher Henderson - at their best!
Thats so COOL!!!!!

Recorded on July 1, 1935 as part of an historic session that also featured "King Porter Stomp", "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" {vocal by Helen Ward}, and "Jingle Bells". The original Victor issue indeed had a "scroll label"- the one pictured here is the "Swing Classic" reissue from the early '40s.

There's simply something fantastic about Benny Goodman material, especially from the 1930s. The "King of Swing" will forever be playing on a recording somewhere in the world making hearts just a little lighter with his classic, inimitable style. And now kids, "Let's Dance."

Correction: I was mistaken in stating that "Remember" and "Walk Jenny Walk" were recorded in 1935 it was actually April of 1936.

I'm positive that the overtitle as you call it was used as early as 1935 and probably on original issues. How they knew they would be classics is beyond me. I have Benny's 1935 Victor of "Remember" and "Walk Jenny Walk" on a scroll victor with the "Swing Classic" right over Nippers head. It's a great looking label.

Lazy Fatigue! Yes that sounds right. But give me the energetic pulse of the early thirties any day :-)

"Lazy fatigue"--I love that term you invented, G. What other kinds of "fatigues" are there? Hmmm..,.but thanks for another mellow number on a surprisingly mellow autumn afternoon.

One of those Fletcher Henderson arrangements. Nicely done. You can tell when a record was popular if it stays in the catalog for a few years. This is a late pressing.
