Poland had a top generation from 1972 to 1982, and then slided down to its normal level. Other Eastern European countries have had similar great decades, Hungary in the 1950s, The USSR, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia in the 60s, a brief time for Croatia at the end of the 1990s.

But even in their best Age, the 60s, Easterners were beaten by the best West Europeans or by Brazilans.

Thanks Simon! Poland should win the World Cup 1974! But the raining game with Germany, You know. Many Germans says Poland was better than the Netherlands and Germany as well in this time. Football is a lucky game sometimes ;-)

Typical English hand wringing: "why didn't we win?" etc etc. "Polish goalie a clown" etc What we forget is that Poland went on to play some of the most entertaining football of the 1974 world cup. It doesn't bear thinking how boring England would have been in comparison. Poland beat Argentina, thrashed Italy and finished third (and don't forget they had already beaten us in the home match). All without top player Lubanski. Szarmach, Deyna, Gadocha Lato et al set the 74 cup alight. Bravo Polska!
