http://www.iParentMagazine.com - A short video with historical footage of the bloody Marine Corps participation in World War I during the famed battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918, during which the Corps earned its nickname from the Germans, Teufel Hunden, or "Devil Dog".

In the face of massive casualties and five failed attempts to take the real estate, the tenacious Marines were finally successful on a sixth attempt. While the narrator leaves out not only the Devil Dog reference and fact that the French renamed the area the "Wood of the Marine Brigade" but General Pershing's legendary reference: "The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle!".

Happy 235th birthday to the United States Marine Corps!

  • For any of you armchair warriors out there. This is where...we! The Marines, got the very well earned nickname of Teufulhunden by the Germans. Translated in english 'Devil Dog' and thats just what they were and many after them. Semper Fi!

  • @yourdaddy20192 Thanks, that's what I gathered from various books on D-Day – and the US Marines were pretty busy at the time, cleaning some dream-islands in the Pacific :-)

Regarding "Naval infantry", we have the same word in French (Infanterie de Marine) for Army units which were formerly "Colonial infantry", thus trained to land from ships to hostile shores. Navy men with infantry training, to protect ships from pirates… or board enemy ships, etc. are "Fusilier Marins", including Navy seals

  • @Hippophilee if it weren't for the friends i made there, I would've changed my past and joined the Army. they have cooler gear and they don't recruit with bullshit historical lies.

  • @Hippophilee no there wasn't. The ones that participated were Royal Marines. I have heard stories about Marine engineers being there to blow up the wire. I haven't come across anything verifying it.

  • @darkritten2 I know plenty seeing I was a marine for 8 years. No, it's no longer Naval infantry you're talking about those days marines were actually on ship protecting it from pirates. We are still part of the navy, but naval infantry? come on now, stop playing COD pussy.

  • @yourdaddy20192

You know nothing about the Marine Corps. It's not a "mini army," it's a naval infantry. The one the NAVY can be in command of to gain its strategic points on land.

  • @Hippophilee yes

  • I am a stranger in this discussion but… did any US Marines unit participate in the battle of Normandy in '44?

  • @yourdaddy20192 Yeah but the way they selistate the Marine Corps who wouldn't join the Marines over the army.... haha

  • spectacular camera shot from 3:31 to the end!!!

  • @TheGefro We also have to understand the Marine corps is constantly attacked and threatened to be shut down. So I can see why they do this. The Marine Corps was shut down after the revolutionary war for about 10 years. You can watch all these videos about history, but once you actually study it you will understand it's mostly all phony. The Marine corps is actually a mini 2nd Army...kinda like a SWAT team.

  • @TheGefro oh of course, I agree marine corps does have it's own accomplishments and Marines are bad ass, I was one myself. What I'm ashamed of is what they have in the hymn and what's told to juniors is that the Army is weak and battles that are actually Army accomplishments are discredited and passed off as Marine corps history. Then you have boots walking around talking n looking stupid. calling Army soldiers cowards in Korea that gave their life 4 1st mardiv is childish

  • @yourdaddy20192 Sounds.. like Marines haha

  • @yourdaddy20192 I'm not trying to discredit the army at all.. and i'm sure they had a hand in Marine Corps accomplishments... but i'm pretty sure the Marine Corps has there fair share of accomplishments without the armys support!

  • @TheGefro The Army had plenty to do with with marine corp accomplishments. The marines don't acknowledge it because it's Army.

  • @TheGefro There were only 8 marines and 2 navy midshipmen in Tripoli with 500 hundred greeks etc and William Eaton an Army officer captured Derne, which was absolutely crucial to capture Tripoli. If it weren't for William Eaton and those greeks O'bannon and those marines would've been fucked. I would also like to add they rolled with William Eaton the whole time and for the fight for Derne 1 marine was killed and two were wounded. Yet, marines never give credit to William Eaton.

  • @TheGefro Actually, that's not true a majority of the battles Marines boast about like Chapultepec, Tripoli, civil war, Trenton, new Orleans, are army stories and the one displayed in this video. Now the Marines that were in Belleau are bad ass and I never said they're not. The battle for Chapultepec were marines were outside the walls firing on the enemy. Soldiers scaled those walls not marines. The marines scaled the walls after the capture of the castle was done by the Army.

  • By the way its not Teufel Hunden its ''TeufelHunde'' i think! Whatever!

  • @yourdaddy20192 ''Army valor?'' The army didn't have anything to do with the USMC accomplishments!

  • @TheGefro And don't get it twisted I have nothing but respect for marines, but a majority of their accomplishments are actually Army valor, true story.

  • @TheGefro I'm not going to argue about the tooth fairy with you.

  • @TheGefro Nope, he didn't. The origins are actually unclear. You can say hitler named them devil dogs, but that's all hearsay. The german fighters actually named them storm troopers. My DD-214 says otherwise.

  • @yourdaddy20192 Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany! ''God doesn't exist?'' Fuck you! Who are you to tell me what is real and what is not!! Jeez you are such an idiot! What are you a modern day Alexander III??? Fighting tyranny on the web and spreading your anti-american propaganda across the web? You fighting the good fight? Fuck off! You ignorant dumb ass! Also stop pretending to be a Marine... Its disgraceful to you and your family!

  • @TheGefro Ok, God isn't real and you still haven't given me the names of the officers you claim have sent a message pertaining to naming marines "devil dogs". The funny thing the marine corps doesn't know if it's even true. So far you wrong and attempting to insult isn't going to make your dumb ass any smarter.

  • @yourdaddy20192 You are such an idiot! It fathoms me why god would put such a huge threat to humanity on this fucking green earth! Every time you talk you kill the earth!!! Every time you make a stupid remark 100 kids in South Africa die from malaria!
