On July 9 1999, when students in Iran peacefully protested the closure of a Reformist newspaper, they were attacked in their dormitories. A week of protests followed with thousands pouring onto the streets, often met with extreme violence from police and militia forces.
The day of July 9 18 Tir in the Iranian calendar has become a significant day for the protest movement of Iran. Almost 10 years later in 2009, the movement exploded once again, in what has been known as the Green Movement, this time hundreds of thousands came out. Today, ten years later the students and citizens of Iran are witnessing a similar atmosphere, as police and militia have responded to their protest with censorship and violence.
Whatever happens in Iran today, the movement lives on.
