MAIWALU TRAIL. (7 mi. one-way. Challenging.) At the western end of Waipio Beach, opposite the stream from the lookout, a switchback trail leads up the cliffs and over to Waimanu Valley. The switchback panoramas surpass even the astounding views from the lookout. This trail reveals unique and unparalleled waterfall and valley views. However, during rainfall, this trail can be quite treacherous, with narrow and slippery cliff-side passes and unclear paths. Most hikers plan on spending three days on the excursion; dont forget to pack enough water, food, rain gear, and insect repellent. While you cant camp in Waipio, it is possible to get a free backcountry camping permit from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife, 19 E. Kawili (☎ 808-974-4221), in Hilo, to camp in Waimanu Valley.

seriously, what is wrong with you kicking the rocks. What kind person is so lolo. leave it as you found it . What did you take some lava rock back home with you too?

@peeniwalii The rocks were put up by some turists a night before. Knocking them down meant leaving the place the way we found it. Why would you assume I'd take lave rocks? #xenophobia
