@declanring - Some folks I know are using fishing line to string their malas, fishing line is incredibly strong.

In speaking to many lamas, they say there could be several reasons for the number of beads. All that really matters is that we use the mala with the intention of helping ourselves and others cultivate greater happiness with good motivation. The rest is all academic.
