Dr. Tony Attwood returns to talk about Girls with Asperger's.

In this report, Dr. Tony feels the 4:1 (boys to girls) ratio is inaccurate... he believes the actual ratio to be closer to 2:1. He calls out several reasons why girls are usually not diagnosed until later on in life.

Dr. Tony also shares positive news such as Girls with Asperger's success in the workplace and he suggests several possible career paths. Dr. Tony is now organizing a 1-day workshop on Girls with Asperger's. Stay tuned for updates!

  • P.Ps and its like i'm the one writing, its my past, it my pressent, its how i am. and yes i do feel, yes can communicate. but i had to be taught how by my dad, i wish it were possible to speak with your doctor, someone who will spend the time to really see me. If there is anyway you can help, im tired of feeling like this and not having the answer. but i know i have aspergers through self diagnoses and i know most docs hate their jobs being done for them, so they turn opposite. thank you xx

  • @AliaETorrie - We don't have a particular Dr for our son. You're watching a program with Dr.Tony Attwood. He is one of the world's leading authorities on autism. You might seek out the autism society where you live and review their doctor resources.

  • Thank you, would you mind if i forwarded this video to the Adult autism clinic in glasgow, who seemed to think beacuse i study acting, i talk with my hands and am able to comunicate, that i dont have it.. when i seem to have ever other symptom, and i scored 35 on the AQ... there are alot of actors and actresses with AS, it is not a label, our brains are all unique, but we have traits, thats all is traits.. why do theykeep missing this in women.. i know this is me, im 29 and have alway felt alone

  • @AliaETorrie - Don't mind at all. Go right ahead. :) Autism Hangout

  • What is the correlation between Aspergers and Eating Disorders? Coincidentally, I was suspected of having A.S. while I was in treatment for an Eating Disorder, so it was weird the hear Dr. Tony talk about the two. As I say, I have A&A.

  • @Buffheart - Hi Buffheart. I entered this question for Dr. Tony's next installment. Craig Evans - Autism Hangout (dotcom)

  • Gosh, if only they'd had a social group for me when I was in junior high!

  • Really helpful video; thanks! I have a long history of anorexia nervosa and developed the illness in part because I was teased for being a 'geek' at school. I also felt very abnormal and grew to hate myself. I started to starve and over-exercise in part as 'self punishment' for being the worthless person I thought I was. If only I had been aware that my autistic characteristics were not merely 'neuroticism' - as a doctor suggested when I was 6 yrs old.

  • @InfurnusChaotix I'll accept that offer :P

  • go us Aspies!

  • I love these guys, I'm going to make a video about my aspergers - I was diagnosed at four, and would like you to watch it?

  • Attwood explains it perfectly

  • @aspietrait101 Oh, I agree with you whole-heartedly. I should've said that "...we FEEL like scattered leaves...". The thing I love about it is that I am the living embodiment of yin and yang. 2 extremes, that start out warring, but can bring beautiful harmony through balance. I encourage everyone to explore themselves, find out where your harmonies and chaos' are. Its exciting to start channeling ones chaos into avenues that creates peace and prosperity for oneself. Viva La A.S!

  • @aspietrait101 well im a married aspie lady and i just gotta say the best guys for us is understanding nonjudgmental and patient guys. i told him how i might make mistakes in the relationship because i think differently and gave him examples like not hearing him cuz our audio sensory is off and because hes understanding he understands. its better to ask a NT girl about if a guy is flirting i met my man online its easier to tell if a guy is flirting cuz its in words not body language

  • @Chatsuvage Don't waste time looking for that parent tree. The answer lies within yourself. Aspies are extremely smart, so you will need to find ways to compensate for AS shortcomings. I've figured out how to blend in to the NT world pretty well by figuring out coping skills on my own, even though I never thought to seek out an official diagnosis. I only recently self diagnosed myself, and now all the pieces of my life have come together all at once. It is acutely overwhelming.

  • Is there any info available on how cyclic changes in our monthly hormonal levels affect our AS? How can we alleviate, reduce, or prevent exacerbation of AS symptoms, etc.?

  • @spikethornenebula Do you prefer dating Aspie or NT guys? Or maybe a better question is which type of guy (Aspie or NT) has a better chance of maintaining a long term relationship with us? How did you get around the fact that you are an Aspie to be able to have a good relationship? Since us females are oblivious to NT style of flirting, do you straight up ask the guy if he likes you when you remotely suspect it? I know usually it is too late & guy moves on to next girl.
