In this 89-minute artistsnetwork.tv video workshop, Claudia Nice starts out with the basics of shape, form and proportion using quick exercises to help you create a variety of animals. She then puts together everything you've learned to complete a drawing of a cat from start to finish—concentrating on capturing the pose and characteristics accurately so that the end result is a realistic, elegant (and most-likely mischievous) cat. The video finishes with a review of several different animal drawings (shown step by step) for you to use as inspiration to draw your own favorite animals.

In this preview from Keys to Drawing Realistic Animals with Claudia Nice you'll develop the body of this cat, using varying pencil strokes and a stump to add dark and light hairs that show the value change between the dark and lighter areas of fur.

  • Not a stupid question at all @shilohsam2. Using different pencils in the same drawing is a practice that several artists use to achieve more realistic results. A #2 pencil has a limited value range. Hope that helps.

  • hey what type of paper do you use to avoid smudging?

  • This might be a stupid question but, whatever, I'm not perfect.... If you want your drawing to look like that(real) you must use those different kind of pencils like she does? Meaning that if I draw only with a #2 pencil, it won't look as real as that one?
