A character like Swanny was desperately needed in world cricket, in an era when all the great talents and characters seemed to retire in the space of a couple years (Flintoff, Vaughn, Harmison, Warne, McGrath, Murali, Kumble etc) the world cricket arena was desperately lacking in star quality.
