According to Jewish tradition, after the Maccabees' victory over the Greeks, there was only enough oil to burn for one day in the Temple. Miraculously the oil burned for eight days. Lighting the Hanukkah menorah commemorates this miracle.

To complete this How-To you will need:

A menorah with eight candleholders, plus one for the shamash
9 candles
Matches or a lighter

Step 1: Position your menorah

Position your menorah. Place the menorah in or near a window facing the street on the left side of your home, as you face the entrance from outside.

Tip: Placing a menorah in a window for passerbys to see fulfills the commandment to publicize the miracle.

Step 2: Put a candle in the holder

At nightfall, on the first evening of the Hanukkah holiday, put a candle into the holder at the far right of the menorah as you face it.

Step 3: Light the shamash

Light the shamash, the candle used to light the others, and recite the three Hanukkah blessings.

Tip: Never use the Hanukkah candles to light each other.

Step 4: Light the first candle

Light the first candle and place the still-lit shamash in its holder, which is usually above or below the other candles.

Step 5: Pray

After lighting the first candle, recite or chant the Hanerot Halalu prayer.

Tip: At this point, many people sing Maoz Tsur or other appropriate Hanukkah songs.

Step 6: Let the candle burn

Let the candles burn for at least 30 minutes.

Step 7: Continue lighting candles

On the second through eighth nights, add a candle to the left of the previous one and repeat the process, lighting the newer candle first and moving right. Eliminate the first candle blessing.

Step 8: On Fridays, light the menorah first

On Friday nights, always light the Hanukkah candles before the Shabbat candles. Light the menorah before sunset.

  • @superduperhappyvids Jesus wasn't a Jew, he was a Israelite. the Israelites despised the Jews for abandoning the prophets and worshiping the babylonain talmud put together by the elders. saying that jesus is a jew, is zionist propaganda and in fact a complete lie.

  • @truegreen7 saying that jesus was a jew is the most spread jewish lies in history. anybody who isn't a complete idiot can read the book of john and figure that out, but what would i know im just a sub-human as the talmud states.

  • @sexysweet87 Jesus wasn't Jewish he was Hebrew stock, you need to learn the difference between a Jew and a Hebrew. Jesus actually said that the Jews worship the devil. read the Babylonian Talmud, it calls mother Mary a whore, Jesus a liar, that its ok to kill and steal from a gentile, and also that anybody who isn't jewish is a goyum sub-human and thats just the tip of the iceberg.

  • Support the building of the THIRD TEMPLE!!A Blast the al-aksa mosque if you have to.

  • Im buddhist and im having a menorah for new year's eve.

  • This video was not made for observant Jews....it was made for non-Jewish people like me, who are curious about Hanukkah, and how it is celebrated. What I find most interesting is that a simple video like this can evoke such hateful and profane comments......if you don't like it, don't watch it.....

  • God bless and rebuild Jerusalem

  • It's not Hebrew if you don't say it CORRECTLY!! Hanukkah isn't that complicated!
