Before steamboats, cotton was floated down the Mississippi River on wooden rafts to Natchez where it was sold. The boatmen sold the raft for it's wood and took an Indian trail known as the Natchez Trace back north.

Next time I visit the southern end of the Trace I want to go see Springfield Plantation where Andrew and Rachel Jackson were married.
