A Burmeister & Wain air-blast injection diesel engine from 1907 located in a water pumping station at Ålborg, Denmark being started in 1996 for the 150th anniversary of MAN B&W Diesel A/S. At the time it was the oldest known B&W diesel to operate. It is very similar in design to the engine successfully built and operated in 1897 by Dr-Ing. Rudolf Diesel.

Because it is an air-blast injection engine, compressed air from 45-62 bar (about 650-900 psi) is used to do the actual fuel injection. Fuel and blast air is delivered to the top of the injector by separate pumps, and when the cam opens up the injector, the very high air pressure at the injector forces the fuel down into the injection nozzle and into the highly heated air inside the combustion chamber. The blast air is actually delivered by an external air line to the engine during startup, and is disconnected when the engine is running to allow the internal air pump to take over.

  • What horse power rating does this engine have?

  • not sure

  • @douro20

    This is a 4 stroke, yes ?

  • @kennjohnsen

    Yes it is.

  • :-) I just wanted to know if this baby is still started on specially occations. I come from Aalborg myself, and i study to be a marine engineer.

  • Sorry I'm not sure.

  • @casnick1

    around 25hp

  • @douro20 hes asking if this motor is ever started on any other occasions, and that it very interesting to engineering students...i can translate all major languages, thanks to google, lol

  • GRANDIOSO !!!!!!!!!

  • Nice engine with great sound.

  • (the only video on wouda on you-tube, is just one of the 2 (small) compressor steam engines, used to compressed the used steam into water again, you know: the steam of those 4 _big_ engines I talked about. It really deserves much better coverage!)

  • But I like this one! Of course this is not about steam. But it is nice to watch the beginning of a technology that would finally take over my love. A real sympathetic engine start!. (again on wouda: not the start of the engines, but the start of the pumping is really impressive!)
