Rachmaninov was an eloquent letter writer. I hope to bring you with me on his journey in music and particularly
his own private thoughts He was from a wealthy and aristocratic family Who were highly respected and fond of entertaining Although little is known of his parents and he rarely spoke of them But he was of a line of musical Rachmaninovs ,and his mother was his first teacher. .. His comfortable early life was soon to change and from an early start he had to learn to gradually become a man apart and outwardly emotionless..His father was a complex character who sat at the piano for hours just messing about but he wanted a military career for Sergei who he adored? but kept going away and eventually never came back The once wealthy family were in dire straights but Sergei,s Grandmother luckily was a rich woman and took over charge of the small boy He had private tutors for languages and was enrolled in the Leningrad Conservatory and went a bit crazy left to his own devices on the streets Spending piano practise time at the skating rink where he was fast becoming a virtuoso there Jumping off cars or just hanging about and at home no one knew. He became lazy and undisciplined until his sister got him to accompany her singing lessons. Poor reports at conservatory and a meeting with his cousin Siloti
led to another important musician taking over Sergei.
An awesome and self promoted character whose disipline and eccentricity brought results through scaring his pupils with his severity and they tried hiding under the piano But he got results and to read about him is quite amusing . to read about His teacher Dubuque My book is in tatters researching these characters I am in another world !! ....So Sergei poor little lad was put on a train to Moscow cluthing a bag and weeping as he waved goodbye to his beloved Grandmother.............

  • Rachmaninov,s first symphony was first performed on March 15th 1897 . It,s failure was the starting point for a career of both depression , success and admiration . His 2nd Piano Concerto emerged from his meetings with Doctor Dahl and hypnosis....and the rest is Piano history.........

  • Thanks for this insight into the thoughts of a great composer. Particularly revealing are Rachmaninov's conflicting, contradictory and defensive reactions to the 'failure' of his first symphony - emotions that most of us must have experienced at some point in our lives. There is plenty to admire in the first symphony but my own favourite is the third, despite strong competition from the luscious and ever-popular second.
