I prefer the gathering method myself - or if I'm feeling lazy and I've made posterboard pattern minus seam allowances, I place the pattern on top of the cut fabric, and press the seam allowance over the pattern edge. It works great for circles. :3
I personally don't like the slits method because it can result in frayed fabric at the hem - not good!
