Gilad Shalit's parents receive a video tape of their son in Palestinian captivity; Israel releases 18 Palestinian prisoners


On Friday (Oct. 2), the Head of the Human Resources Directorate, Maj. Gen. Avi Zamir, visited the family of the abducted IDF soldier Gilad Shalit in Mitzpe Hila, in order to deliver a video tape that shows Gilad Shalit.

Before the family received the video tape, it was watched by the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, and the government official in charge of the release of Gilad Shalit, Haggai Hadas. Immediately afterwards the release of 19 female Palestinian prisoners was approved. 18 prisoners were released to the Judea and Samaria Region and one prisoner was released to the Gaza Strip. Afterwards the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak, also watched the video tape.

The Abduction of Gilad Shalit

Staff Sergeant Gilad Shalit (then Corporal) was abducted on June 25th 1006. Palestinian terror operatives attacked an Israeli army position on the Israeli side of the southern Gaza Strip border after entering Israel through an underground tunnel near the Kerem Shalom border crossing. During the attack, two IDF soldiers were killed and three other wounded. According to the reports, Gilad Shalit was most likely also wounded.

Following the abduction of Gilad Shalit, the IDF carried out Operation Summer Rains in the Gaza Strip from June 28th 2006 until November 26th 2006. IDF ground forces entered the Gaza Strip for the first time after the completion of the disengagement in 2005. During the operation, three IDF soldiers and two Israeli civilians, and approximately 270 Palestinian terror operatives were killed. The operation ended in a mutual cease-fire obliging the Hamas terror organization to stop firing high trajectory weapons at Israeli territory.

Throughout the time of his captivity, the contact with Gilad Shalit has been held through letters and video tapes: In September 2006, Gilad Shalit's parents received the first letter from their son, which was recently published. In June 2007, a video tape was received showing Gilad Shalit reading a statement written for him by his captors. In February 2008, another letter was delivered which did not include any further details on his situation. In April 2008, a letter from his parents was delivered to Gilad Shalit with the help of the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy. In June 2008, a third later from Gilad Shalit was delivered to Israel with the help of former US President Jimmy Carter.
