I think the simplest possible definition of self-righteiousness is this;

If you think you're a good person

But your victims disagree with you.

Well some people do like killing, serial killers are a good example of this. But I agree most murders are based on "purpose" rather than instinct. But then again most serial killers try to make a false purpose out of their actions ... so I don't know. It's complicated and really comes down to what particular person or groups you're talking about.

In many social controversies you have both sides with "victims" claiming the opposition are bad. In smoking ban debate you have people claiming victimhood from second-hand smoke, and the other side claiming victimhood from smoking bans taking their rights away.

Another example; what about when one doesn't know they have victims?

GE food protestors believe they are protecting third world nations when they convince them to turn down genetically modified foods

Religious people would disagree with you that you're a good person for trying to make people more skeptical

A criminal may not think of the cops as good people, depending on the criminal

An abusive pet owner may think his dog is bad when the dog rightly turns on him

How can one; atheist, cop, dog or otherwise, know with certainty that they are being good and not self-righteous? How do you tell if you are doing good or just believe you are?

ed gein wasnt a religous fanatic but his mother was thats what messed him up. Thank you, Im a christian and im sick of people saying that somehow The bible supported the holocaust or the civil war(ive met someone who could blame both world wars the afgan war the korean war and vietnam of christianity) people like the church of rome only used the bible as an excuse(and an unfounded one too but because no one was alowed to read the bible then so no one knew it didnt say that)

Great video! In defense of the self-rightious which I am self proclaimed. I listen to all sides and I am flexible but I just feel when I know when something is wrong I want to fight against it. I am self-righteous over: we are one race the human race, God loves all her children regardless of religion, or lack of religion, race, nationality, sex orientation, etc. "You know what I'm sayin?"
