It's amazing to realize Greenstreet didn't act in films till he was in his 60s. He seems so comfortable in front of the camera. That's what I wanna do in my retirement--become a movie star! lol

IN fact, gunsel means a young man kept for sexual purpuses, and has never meant anything else. Hammett used the word to get one past the editors, knowing that they wouldn't know the reference (it is Yiddish, after all) and that they would assume that it referred to a gunman.

Elisha Cook always gets me in this scene when he threatens Bogie, the emotion there surprised me when I first saw it. It's just a bloody good piece of acting.

the definition of the word gunsel and what it implies has long been the subject of debate. Some people read into it the one you do; while other sources has it meaning simply a hoodlum who carries a gun. I can see your point about the word but I find it difficult to see that a movie made at that time would have implied something so racy about one of its main characters.
