Car seats and booster seats help parents protect their children. Innumerable lives have been saved through the use of these devices. There is simply no better way to protect your child during a collision. But what about those critical moments immediately following an accident? In those moments, the car seat itself can pose a danger.
The University of Alabama's Office for Technology Transfer has developed the Emergency Harness Release System (EHRS) to ensure the speedy removal of a child from a car seat. UA is looking to license the Emergency Harness Release System. The EHRS is a patent pending technology.

The chest clip isn't what makes it a 5 point harness. The 5 point are both shoulders, both hips and crotch. Also it only here in the states (where people are too stupid to make sure the seat fits their child(ren) properly) that we have to have the darn thing. It is ONLY to help make sure the straps are in the correct position before a crash happens.

Stupidest thing I've ever seen! So what if someone doesn't see the big yellow release sign? Wow...just WOW!
I would never use a car seat with that on there.

I know more about car seats than the average parent at 15. I have to say we should say bye to the chest clip because 90% of the time it is not at armpit level. 1 and 2 we must be allowed to import seats because sweedish seats rear face to 55 pounds why are we at 20 minimum and boost at 40 redicules and sooo 80s
children should be rear facing to atleast 40 pounds then harness to 80 pounds and or 53 inches in the britax regent/frontier/radian80 xt sl etc.

um people about the chest clip. if the seats dont have the five point harness it is MORE DANGEROUS in a car accident. the child could slide out the the seat and get thrown or in a toddler that is one years old that child could get thrown if the seat doesnt fit the baby right. they have proven that more lives have been saved with the Five point Harness then the Three Point Harness System.

Dude- just get rid of the chest clip! Other countries don't have them for this very reason.

The demo shows the difficulty when the infant seat is facing forward. If properly installed and facing backward, if would be more difficult because the buckle release is between the baby and the back of the seat. All the more reason to have an emergency release handle located on the 'back' of the infant seat.

If people can't figure out a chest clip, how are they going to figure out one of these contraptions? And these won't fit all seats. The evenflo triumph advance, for example, has a sliding harness that cannot be rigged up with the first contraption. So a "universal" release product just isn't going to happen. Sorry. I agree that we should just get rid of the chest clip. It's a fairly useless bit of plastic that only serves to make us feel like our children are better protected.

To josieinjeans and others responding..child proof lighters might prevent a 1 in 10,000 chance of an incident but you know what?..that's over 300 significant lives saved a year so I'm buying one! And trying to find a belt cutter in your purse while unconsious after a wreck? That's brilliant,..think outside the box...everything you expect to happen...doesn't! Anything that prevents loss of posterity needs to be implemented without question. When available...I'm a huge advocate for this product!
