The great, underrated American masterpiece that nobody's seen. Directed by the great, underrated American director Howard Hawks, this is the movie about a group of stoic pilots who fly through the dangerous Andes in rain or shine (though mostly rain and other disastrous forms of weather). Their world is interrupted by the arrival of Bonnie (the wonderful, wonderful Jean Arthur), a showgirl passing through on her way to New York. Though at first shocked at their way of life, she begins to understand their moral code, and tries to get close to the leader Geoff (Cary Grant). Sexual, professional and personal tensions arise, leading to a climatic plane crash.

This is the celebrated "Who's Joe?" scene, where we see just how closed-off and stoic these fliers are after the death of one of their own (that would be Joe).

  • WOW!!! Jean arthur can really play!

  • You can also hear her play the piano in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," though she really shows off her stuff here.

  • amen!! great message of truimph over despair!!you have to have some crazy way of looking at it to go on and remain courageous and sane in the times we live in now!! there is much to be said for the

good ol boys code of honor!!

grown up yet?? hope so! lol love it!

  • Bloody aces.

  • she's spectacular

  • Groovy.

  • This clip shows the wonderful atmosphere and cameraderie that permeates the whole film. Humor, adventure, romance and an exotic setting called "Barranca" (a banana port somewhere in South America)--what more could you ask for in a classic film? This is one of my top 10, right up there with Casablanca (but this film has no bad guys).

  • Thanks! Now I want to see it.
