The young Whispers (I cite here the super talented twins Walter and Wallace Scott, lead vocals of the Group) singing live at "Soul Train" in 1973; just before to be signed to the new Don Cornelius Label with the same name as the show (Soul Train).
I figure out that Don decided to have The Whispers among his music jewels right after this show.
Originally recorded for Janus, this hit is available on the 15th Soul Train Compilation released by Soul Train Records (some years later re-branded as Solar for another season of great Californian hits under the command of General Dick Griffey and the artistic inspiration of Leon Sylvers the third,,,you know them?).
Take a big breath and watch it. This style years later determined the success of the white bands saga, started with NKOTB and all its following clones...

  • So Happy.... thank you very much....

I run into a Soul Train Lp I paid 1 buck on a local Flea market.

I was 11 and in Italy you hadn't the chance to listen to a lot of good, black, overseas music...

My life changed. Had to wait the 1980 to see the faces of Walter and Wallace on an import LP with their name and "And the Beat Goes On" as main hit. (read below...)

  • Later on, I bought all the old vinyl LPs (that I actually save with extreme care) and try to find all the Whispers TV shows (awa the other "jewels" at Solar as Dynasty, Shalamar, Lakeside, Carrie Lucas, Midnight Star, Collage etc..)

Is a sort of "falling in love" with soul, funk and jazz that shot me down when I was a child...

When I'm down, I think to Maurice White, Walter and Wallace, Aretha or Marvin and I feel blessed.... :-)

So, when Pasadenas recorded "Tribute" I jumped for joy....

  • It's a shame I can only hit the like button only once.

  • Very sad song but the Whispers sung it to it's a great sad song.

  • This Whispers Track has The Trammps written all over it, I love it.

  • @SheLovesSmoothJazz They didn't grow their "Burt Reynolds" until later on.....

  • @soulsista1220 That's how they looked in the '60s back when they did "The Dip"

  • them guys in the Background know they can move!!!!!! Great timing and precision

  • Long time since I heard this song, think I was about 18 when it came out. Takes me back to my first serious boyfriend.

  • my favorite soul train background

  • I remember this song from years ago. I knew it was a sad song but I loved the chorus so much that I never really knew the lyrics. I just knew Walter and Wallace sounding good doing the lead. I actually remember seeing this performance on Soul Train. I forgot Walter and Scotty didn't always have mustaches though.

  • What?!! No mustaches?!!
