We sent my sisters Bichon Frise to petsmart to get groomed for Christmas. This was the result. The manager stated that our dog had shook it's head too much in the cage and was not used to the air on his ears because he had several knots. What dog cuts his own ear and neck due to air on his ears.

  • @MrJacob6042: A "few knots" means the dog was really matted, they are just being nice. I'm a groomer, I know what they mean. When a dog's ear is matted, it can cause severe skin irritation. When you shave the mats off, hematomas occur and the dog does shake it's head because it feels weird. It's like having a Band-Aid on for months at a time, imagine that on its ears. If you really did brush your dog AND comb it, mats wouldn't happen. Bichon are one of the the highest maintenance dogs on Earth.

  • It is also unfair to claim all PetSmart groomers are horrible. I can only speak for my salon but currently we have two groomers competing in international grooming competitions and everyone takes the time to go to seminars and clinics so we can continue our education and stay current with the latest trends and techniques. I find it quite funny how the video was posted to make PetSmart look horrible and all you do was show the world that you neglected your dog.

  • It looks like the dog was terribly matted to begin with. They most likely pre-shaved him to get all the mats off, washed him, dried him then put him in the kennel to wash and dry the other dog they had in the time slot. While he was in the kennel he shook his head to much causing a hematoma. The manager probably told the groomer to send the dog home therefore they couldn't finish the cut.

You want to brush the dog daily with a metal comb and a slicker or pin brush. This will prevent matting.

  • all i can say is if your dog has matts or "notts" to be nice then the groom will suck and the dog will hate it... matts are not a good thing brush your dogs!!!! if not give it to a better owner and get a chihuahua... and if you do make sure to get its nails trimmed at least thats really all they need either than an occasional bath... seriously...

  • When you have matts on your dog, it cuts off circulation to the blood vessels. When they are shaved off, the blood comes rushing back and when they shake their heads bc it feels weird having them not there anymore, it bursts them. It has nothing to do with the groomer, it's owners not taking care of their dogs and expecting the groomers to just fix everything when you haven't maintained your dogs coat at all.

  • You are the classic ignorant dog owner that I have to deal with every day of my life.

  • Why didn't they finish the dog? It looks like the did the rough out, kinda washed and sent him home. Did they stop grooming because he hurt himself or do they just suck?

  • poor baby!!!!! i just want to cuddle with it! it looks so sad and hurt!

  • @MeDsCP I agree. Research hematoma. It can happen.

  • I also am a dog groomer...When the ears are really matted, It squeezes the ears to the point that the circulation is being cut off.... when the hair is shaved away, suddenly the blood rushes back into the ears! It feels like after your foot goes to sleep, when the blood returns to your foot it tingles/hurts!! The dog will shake its head (just like I shake my foot when it does this!!) Causing the hematoma... if not elevated, it will continue to the point of bleeding!! Sad.

  • I had a similar experience with Petsmart with my Tibetan Terrier. I had an appointment and when I called them 5 hours after I dropped him off for a bath and brush, they said they had just started on him but he would be done soon. At hour 6 I called again and went there at hour 7. Waited for another hour in the store only to demand that I get my dog. He had been stripped! He was obviously traumatized. Needless to say, we found another groomer who does a beautiful job in less than 4 hours.

  • With apologies to the groomers here, because I know the crap you go through/have to take, there looks to be dried blood on the hair also, not just hematomas. And it is a horrible groom. If this dog was so bad and so badly matted, they should have refused to groom it there and had the owner take it to a vet office for a complete shave down under a vet's supervision where the vet could give an exam afterward and explain the condition. The groomer should have communicated better ahead of time.
