Travelling North along the M6, take junction 20 onto the M56 (West towards Chester). Enjoy some of the delights of Cheshire, including the famous old man of Frodsham (a cliff face which looks like the profile of a man), and, on the same stretch of motorway, the chemical works around Runcorn. Before reaching Chester follow the M53 Birkenhead signs. Between Junction 2 and 1 notice a brown traffic sign labeled 'For Mersey Ferries & Historic Warships follow All Docks', this is the route to follow. Carry along the M53, stay in the middle lane, do not come off at junction 1, but leave the motorway immediately afterwards on the A5139 to All Docks. (if you miss this junction, continue to the tunnel approach area and stop at the offices in front of and to the left of the toll booths. If its your lucky day the duty police officer will direct you away from the tunnel and onto a service road which rejoins the A5139 dock road. In this eventuality, turn left into the A5139 and continue your journey, passing the warships on your right). Go straight over the first roundabout into Dock Road, (notice large aluminium storage tanks on both side). Continue through the next set of traffic lights and after a further 750 metres notice the rusty bows of a German WWII submarine (U-534) on your right. At the next roundabout turn right, follow the sign to Woodside Mersey Ferries, through a red painted steel bridge. Continue through another roundabout and second bridge to next set of traffic lights. At these lights turn left into Tower Wharf and then right at the next small roundabout. The ARI (Twelve Quays House), and car park are immediately on you left - if you cross a green painted bridge, you've gone to far.
