Qumran, the Essenes and the Desert Sea Scrolls

To the north west of the Dead Sea are the caves of Qumran, home to a monastic community whose library contained a remarkable collection of scrolls of the Hebrew Scriptures. Their unexpected discovery by a shepherd boy more than 60 years ago has given rise to remarkable insights into the nature of the Hebrew Scriptures, the kind of monastic community that was around just before the time of Christ.
