You can just park your ship in the water by the x of the score multiplier and you'll be completely safe until the sub comes up. The enemies don't seem to shoot at that part of the screen at all, though you will have to keep your top weapon firing to kill the ones that fly towards you, and some of the boats will fire on you from behind so a spreader or grenade is nice to have.

grrrrr! i would go throught the other stages with no problem (cept for fighting Gekko) but then i would get here and would get my ass blown up! i would get game overs here all the time! i finally got the the mid-boss, barely beat him with one life left and no more continues, got through the factory ok, then to the end boss. i had him on the ropes and i went under him a bit to avoid an attack and he headbutted me!

@lKitel When i was a kid i only passed this level with 2 flashes or 2 junos, there was once i passed with a just a canno and normal fire, only to lose my last life on the boss...
