Hi, I'm Dave Weiner. I'm a Favored Nations recording artist, a G.I.T. graduate and have been playing in Steve Vai's band since 1999.
Every Wednesday I do a new Riff Of The Week™ guitar education video. Here's Season 3, Episode 52 "How to get started with Melodic Soloing"
Don't forget to view the tab, listen to the audio clips and download the backing tracks (when applicable) for this ROTW at: www.daveweiner.com/rotw.
You can find Hi-RES HD versions of this video at riffoftheweek.com or by subscribing (for free) to the ROTW podcast in ITunes (search Dave Weiner).
Interested in my music? My first cd "Shove The Sun Aside" is available on iTunes, Amazon and at www.daveweiner.com/store

hey dave, great videos. im still not clear with this. so when making melodies, we can use any scale or chords to make the melody? for example: we can make a melody out of the C dorian scale or the songs chord progression?

kwik kwestion lol i kinda discovere a scale and i was wondering,do i split the notes or do i use the root to find the scale it belongs to?

@DAVEWEINER Oh wow!
You know after you said that thing about being in Vai's band, I instantly recognized you!
It's sad that I never see you playing solos in Vai's band, you are a great soloist, but that doesn't mean you don't, I just don't see very very many Vai videos.

I disagree on that last part. With that point of view we should first master a diddley bow that has only one string, then pass to an instrument of 2 strings and so on.
If you start learning guitar with a 7 strings and get it into your system early it can be very beneficial

Great riff lessons man!!
How come you play a 7 string guitar?? I don't think I've seen you use that extra string yet...so...what for? lol Just curious
xXAvatarofGuitarXx 2 years ago
I use it plenty for my own music and for playing in Vai's band. I don't use it much for ROTW b/c 99% of ROTW viewers can't relate to it.
Plus, if you don't have 6 strings down yet, you shouldn't bother with 7.
