This is Combat Yi Xin Gong Quan (意心功拳) free style form and applications. This is a demonstration of the use of Li family Yi Xin Gong Quan (Intention heart skill fist) by John Painter at the 2006 A Taste of China Teachers demonstrations. Yi Xin Gong Quan is the name given to Dr. Painters personal methods of using Yi (意) to produce internal power skill / Nei-gong Jin (內 功勁). Yi Xin Gong was developed by Dr. John Painter from the teachings of the Li families ideas about Yiquan(意拳) or (intention fist) developed by Master Wang, Xiang-Zhai. The art of Yiquan came to prominence in the early 1940's through the efforts of Master Wang. Dr. Painter has not trained directly in the Yiquan lineage. He was taught methods derived from Yiquan by his teacher, Li, Long-dao (李 龍 道) of Sichuan Province China.

The methods are similar to the art of Yiquan in many aspects with two major notable exceptions. The first is that Yi Xin Gong Quan uses five base standing forms that are different from Yiquans' basic forms. Second Yi Xin Gong makes use of powerful sense memories and guided imagery first to relax the body and balance the protagonist and antagonist muscles. This is called finding Song (鬆). Next the sense memories are used to energize muscle receptors that train muscle fibers to fire at a rapid rate during standing and movement training even though the practitioner remains apparently relaxed. Dr. Painter has devised a number of different methods of training developed after years of study of neurology, psychology, and human kinetics.

He has devised a new and innovative way of training internal power methods using the basic principled of Chinese internal arts blended with modern science and kinetic power development through visualization. Students begin with seated meditation; move to standing forms and then to moving forms and from there to push hands and then equipment and two person and multiple opponent combat tactics. Dr. Painters desire is not to supplant Yiquan or Dachengquan with a new art. His goal through scientific research is to increase the martial communities understanding of the science behind internal power development and how this knowledge can benefit all martial and health practices.

Scientific research has shown that the methods employed by Dr. Painter in Yi Xin Gong Quan standing practice actually increase muscular strength, size, speed and power throughout the entire body by the means of visualizations used during the standing practice. All reactions of students in this demonstration are spontaneous and are the result of mind body intention and are not Qi or mystically related to magical prowess of any kind.

  • Very nice, but your steps could be a little bit more dynamic

  • @paragate Thanks for your comment I will take your thoughts into consideration. John Painter

  • Please click on ABOUT THIS VIDEO More info for a better description of what is going on in this video. Yi Xin Gong is derived from the Li family ideas about Yiquan principles with modern science and kinetics research behind it.

  • Beautiful work.

1-After all the research you've made, do U hav a particular definition of QI now ?

2-Do you intent 2 post some vids about the tibetan snake ? (I intend 2 buy the DVD)

3-Do you know some Jiulong BGZ practitionners in Europe ?

Thanx a lot for sharing M. Painter.

    Vincent

  • ANSWER: Yes but it has nothing to do with martial arts. Qi is for health and vitality not self-defense. There is a big misconception in my opinion about all of that..

ANSWER:Snake Boxing coming soon Yes soon

ANSWER: Yes in Germany, England and Israel

    You are welcome my friend

  • it still looks very similar to Yiquan

  • Yes, of course it looks like Yiquan because it is based on the same principles as Yiquan.

However, as I have not been a formal student of Yiquan just my teachers' principles I do not want to claim that I am doing Yiquan. I am working to explain all of these internal principles from the point of science, kinetics and bio-mechanics so we call our version of this Yi Xin Gong. I deeply respect the arts of Yiquan and Dachengquan its teachers and students.

  • Currently I am attending a Tai Chi class here in Flint, Michigan taught by Dawn Fleetwood. And I was wondering if the Li Family has a Tai Chi form? Are there any clips on youtube.

  • Very beautiful clip, my friend! You move like water with grace and power!

    Wang Rengang

  • Very nice, it is interesting, as I have been developing my personal style in a similar way. When we use the internal principles and flow in a free form way, the results will definitely turn out to look like Yi chuan, because that is also how Yi chuan was developed in the first place. To me it is perfect Human movement. Very nice work sir.

  • Thank you so much ...

  • Dr. Painter rocks. I've been practicing Bagua for quite a few years, and I'm getting more and more interested in the Jiulong methods. I have all of his videos, and they are full of great information - I just wish there were tapes of each individual palm. Someday I want to get down to the Gompa and do some real work.

    Best...

  • Beautiful, relaxing music to accompany such graceful movements.Well done.I shall visualise this when i practise.Thank you so much Sifu.
