Between the 26th September - 1st October 2009 heavy rains fell in the districts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in Southern India. Flash flooding and the breaching of 5 mega dams caused substantial loss of life, land, livelihoods and the destruction of many homes and villages; affecting an estimated 2 million people.
Oxfam India's early response team assessed the worse affected areas emphasising that the biggest threat to public health would be access to adequate and improved water and sanitation.
Almost immediately Oxfam India began to distribute hygiene kits to 9000 families in 35 villages and currently OI is operational in these districts promoting public hygiene through village campaigns and village cleaning involving the local communities.
This series of images is a testament and a dedication to the resilience of these disaster affected communities and to the commitment of the ongoing efforts of the Oxfam India team.
* The first 5 images courtesy of various partners in the field.
All other images were shot by myself; currently working for Oxfam India as a photographer and communications officer out of Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh *
Like it a lot. So evocative, especially the partnership of audio and visual. Especially like the photos at 0:59 and 1:09.
