Hello lionelspilkin10.
I was thinking of what a senior allround ENG cameraman (whole different field, I know) was telling me once what they do with new camera operators where he works.
Whenever he or she can't follow their object, they give them a camera for the weekend and a scale train set with the task of keeping the train in focus while it drives by and recording the results.
Dear Brodieone, what rules are you talking about? None are mentioned in the insert. The reality is with certain variable focus pulls marks are not possible, so you pull by feel and instinct, if there is a monitor you use it. Lets compare CV's can you match our 30 years of focus pulling experience?

Dear Kiely, you clearly have some experience of focus pulling but not enough, normally you would be right but under macro focus pulling circumstances such as a rotating sculpture where pulling to marks is not possible or (as in our example) on the long end of a lens at low light with your depth of field at two inches or less the only option is to pull from the monitor as it offers direct feedback. Check it out!
