Playing what you feel and hear is a big part, yes. But it's not complete without a theoretical understanding of music. It works the other way too. If you know the theory but can't use it, then there's no point in knowing it. Theory can greatly enhance your playing. I know in my experience It's been a big help.

i always laugh at these "theory fanatics" out here who always so quick to spout about their knowlege of theory and how you're supposed to know the "book" aspect of playing music..but then you ask them to play using all these 'theories that they know" and they cant play for the life of them...meanwhile someone who doesnt know the book aspect of it can play them under the table...

music is just a feeling man. u play what you feel and hear. careless if you know theory or not..can you play?
