Questions from members of the US Congress about cost overruns and delays in Iraqi reconstruction projects have prompted a visit to Iraq by the US Government Accountability Office. Two GAO employees visited the construction site for a new maternity hospital in Musayib, Iraq, in early December 2008, to personally check the progress of the project, under supervision of the South district of Gulf Region Division, US Army Corps of Engineers. Their tour was led by Lt. Col. Mike Darrow, who was deputy engineer for the South district at the time, and who has since returned to his regular assignment at USACEs Norfolk District. The new maternity hospital was one of several US Army Corps of Engineers projects in Iraq chosen at random for the GAO report, which is expected to be published in the spring.
