yes, there is a point in keeping hands a bit open. But if you keep 'em closed, there is only one direction where to parry: outwards. If your hands are open, it's easier to parry inwards, but then the punch may come either from the outside of your hands, or to the inside. Two option vs. one. Decision making is faster, if you only have one option.
