There are many topics I wanted to get into in this video but couldn't because of time constraints. One of them was just how very important smooth side-scrolling was to the success of the series. To get an idea of how painful the game could be without fluid backgrounds, please refer to Super Mario Brothers Special for the PC-8801. This was an official release licensed by Nintendo and programmed by Hudson. Though the game isn't terrible, it certainly isn't anything like the NES version. A video can be found here:

Another point that I feel is open to more discussion is the importance of the dream-logic on which Super Mario Bros. is based. This dream logic is something that any user could instantly engage with, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. Because the game is free from the confines of any logical world, the user is entering the world on the game's terms instead of on their own.
As a result, the user is more likely to engage with the world, having no previous biases or notions about the world they are engaging with.
For example, if the game took place in Tokyo, with Tokyo Tower in the background of every shot, the experience of gameplay would be entirely different. Japanese people would get it straight away, but kids who grew up in rural Pennsylvania would feel disoriented. Because all users feel disoriented when they engage with the world of Super Mario Bros., suddenly nobody does.
the game is still awesome i play it sometimes

@yugo34 No doubt! I love the game. That's why I still think about it almost every day of my OCD life. ;-)
