Watch in HD to most clearly see the comparison.

Most impressive examples of video stabilisation at: 0:38 2:25 and 3:40

This is an example of the digital stabilising software to improve shaky hand-held video in post-processing. The software used is the DeShaker plugin for VirtualDub (both free software - links below).

I followed the instructions given in this tutorial: http://www.sundancemediagroup.com/articles/deshaker_guide.htm

The process is processor intensive, and can take a long time to do, especially with HD content, but the results are absolutely incredible, as you can see here. In some cases, where there is extreme camera movement, artefacts become visible at the edges of the frame, but in my opinion, the improvement in stabilisation is well and truly worth the introduction of these artefacts.

DeShaker is great for improving dramatically shaking video footage, but it turns reasonably good hand-held video into rock solid steadycam-like footage.

  • A tripod would be great too! It's just a static shot anyway....

Maybe the distortion around the edges is acceptable for you, it wouldn't work for me. Just look a the folks walking in and out the frame

  • @pasjol Yes, a tripod would have been great. But Daniel didn't have one. And there will be other times when i don't have one either, and I'll be grateful i have DeShaker. Also I plan to try moving camera shots, and without an expensive steadycam, the shots DeShaker can give would be almost impossible.

  • @pasjol Regarding the artefacts, I'm sure tweaking the settings could improve them. This was my first attempt. And seriously, Regarding the artefacts, I'm sure tweaking the settings could improve them. This was my first attempt. And seriously, you'd rather video that's shaking so violently that you can't see it to some shimmering at the edges? This is an extreme example remember.

  • Wow, looks great, the dance especially :P

    jokes aside

    where would one access this?

  • @theTuism All the details are in the description.

  • hong kong phooey

  • @pasjol But if you're worried about the edges just crop the vide a bit and it's sorted. Plan before you shoot to have that little margin and its all peaches.

  • I have a Vado HD (2nd gen) 8GB video camera. It records in H.264 AVI at 30 fps. Can I use the VirtualDub and Deshaker to edit the HD video coming from the Vado HD? Will it work just as you instructed on this video for HD 720p from the Vado HD (2nd gen)? Will the HD picture quality be affected at all?

  • good tool but,

in/for this video i think the original is better to be honest

looks a lot more lifeless in the second video

  • BTW - what's the tune? I love it!

  • how do you save the video in high quality, when i save my videos they are small and bad quality.

  • I've been playing around with VirtualDub's DeShaker too (see my project-specific channel "WalkingToWalsingham"). Given that VirtualDub's Deshaker free, I can't complain about it, but I would love to find a deshaker that can handle clips shot by a camera that's being hand-held while the operator walks forwards or backwards. I did find this...

    pages.cs.wisc.edu/~fliu/project/3dstab.htm

... but I don't know where you can buy this software.

  • That's so cool!
