I must disagree with the too young comments. It's not the age, it's the voice. There are a lot of singers that can tackle Verdi in their 20's. Obviously, Mr. Gubachev is not one of these singers. Too big for him and the pronunciation was atrocious. This should never have made it onto the recital yet alone YouTube. That's just bad publicity, plain and simple.

If somebody wants to sing this aria as 20 year old, it should be a baritone, who doesn`t have to worry about technical mistakes to show in the future, because he will never sing it on the stage. A starting age line for this aria (and role) should be 30- 35 for bass- baritone or 35- 40 for bass. Nice voice Fedor, but pick up some Mozart first, Mephisto can wait.

It's in recital...unless he learns bad "muscle memory" and it affects his technique in the role later...who cares. I sing heavy Verdi now and again and I have no business doing that "for real"...I'm not yet 22. Recitals are different - you can experiment with stuff you might never do in a production...
