The UN Security Council tells the LTTE to disarm or perish. The call was made at the conclusion of an interactive discussion.
Under Secretary General Sir John Holmes and Sri Lankas Ambassador to the UN H.M.G.S. Palihakkara talked to members of the Council on the plight of the civilians held by the LTTE as human shields. They discussed assistance provided to the civilians in LTTE clutches in the Safe Zone and the welfare facilities to the displaced. The briefing and the discussion indicated grave concern of Security Council members over LTTEs intransigence in not allowing the civilians move out. They continue recruitment of under age children in the Safe Zone and the use of civilians as human shields. Key Council members speaking to the media called on the LTTE to disarm and surrender as the quickest way to end the conflict.
