In 2008, Ted Shaeffer was diagnosed with A plastic anemia, a blood disorder which afflicts one or two out of a million people. He began to notice bruising on his arms, and experiencing nose bleeds. Ted decided to check his blood pressure with a wrist BP monitor. When the results were normal -- he thought he was fine. It was about an hour later when he glanced at his wrist where the monitor had been -- it was black and blue with bruising.
Because A plastic anemia is so rare, there are very few specialists. The doctors had little experience and couldn't tell him the cause -- and weren't exactly sure what to do. Within 24 hours they had given him 5 units of red blood and 2 units of platelets.
After finding a center that specialized in my disorder - Ted and his wife flew to Boston for a consult and were told his condition was so severe, he had to start treatment there immediately! Over a month later, Ted needed to return home to his family and his business in Sarsasota, FL.
After a phone interview with Dr Mamus at the Cancer Center, the Boston facility released Ted into his care. For seven months he kept him alive and as healthy as possible considering his circumstances. Every day, he monitored blood levels and orchestrated each required transfusion. He was cautious and took preventative action - taking care of issues before they became problematic.
"I am almost fully recovered. What I appreciated about Dr. Mamus and the Cancer Center was that there was no ego. He was a team player, working with my physicians in Boston. He's a life saver."
