My Mandarin course starts end of this year, and I want to prepare for it. Is it worthwhile starting to learn phrases or would it be more sensible to study some signs? If the latter is the case, with which should I start?

For some reason I'd like to visit a city like this, with all kinds of neon lights on and street vendors still selling food at night :P It would make such a relaxing, pretty night to drive around the city. :] And these snacks look very tasty ;)
