IMO, these long list of awards to an British-produced Indian-made movie only signifies that the West is aggressively marketing itself to India. At a time of dwindling revenues and increasing global competition for the Hollywood brand, you can hardly blame them for trying.
-
As such, the Oscars -- a sometimes crass display of marketing and commerce brandishing itself as a celebration of art and artists -- do not deserve such recognition from a culture and a tradition that is several millenia old. If anything, the award to this work only shows that the West still has lots to learn about Indian music, filmi or classical.

While the felicitation itself was ok, I feel there has been a lot of hullabaloo around the Oscar awards which somehow seem to have been elevated to a status of god-like approval in some Indian minds. India has a long tradition of great music and musicians. The work and the history is rich, deep, diverse, unique, creative and effusive all in itself. We don't need an award from the West to vindicate our music, our culture and our musical sensibilities.

I am not a musician, just a music lover and what follows is my (presumably minority) opinion. It is laughably obvious to me that this is not even close to being the best work by an Indian composer. And Rahman himself would likely agree that this is by far not even his best work. As he said here, he won mainly because of logistical reasons -- e.g., how the work was presented to the awards committee.

"anyone know which TV telecasted it? "
Sun TV.

Raja seems to be in a hurry to get back to his seat. I haven't found the entire felicitation ceremony online..anyone know which TV telecasted it?

Gods to ears, all on stage... feels like music... :)
Thank you Oscar. For, you took them here.

A great Maestro felicitating another little maestro. Great scene!!

I agree with you,,, it'll be an honor for the award to reach the Maestro, ,and not vice versa,, :)
for sure,, no Award can be a benchmark for this Genius's Unlimited Talent,,, :)
-
Wow, a nice video,, This is more than Oscars to Rahman,,, :) Getting this from maestro's hand is a lifetime Achievement award,, :)
Thanks for uploading. Two musical geniuses together. That was heart-warming. Great to see Raja felicitating Rahman and setting to rest media-fuelled speculation about animosity between them. Raja has always liked Rahman and Rahman has always had the greatest respect for Raja. I hope some of their so-called "fans" realize this and stop their bickering.
