Problem is, that Derek's character in this film is an intelligent guy, who got to know the wrong people and was misled when he was younger.

Most racist, narrow-minded douchebags don't have the cognitive abilities to get their mind opened. You just have to watch the comments under videos of this movie.

Even though he wouldn't have deserved an oscar for the little role he played, he did play the key role to Vinyards understanding of institutional racism. For that, he was my favorite character.
